How most golfers practice

If you’re like most golfers you head out to your local range every week and pound out 100 golf balls predominately with your driver. Your intentions are good, but what are you really practicing? If you’re like most, this is what’s really happening. You’re practicing performing the same golf swing faults over and over.

The more and more balls you hit, you’re trying to make compensations so that the golf swing will repeat and perform more consistently.

You probably don’t know this is happening, but it is!

The truth is, you’re not really getting better, you’re just hitting enough balls trying to find that elusive swing (compensation) that produces that ‘WOW’ golf shot where you think you’ve found the holy grail of golf.

Unfortunately, this kind of practice is all too common and won’t get you the perfect golf swing you’re after.

If this is you every week then you are wasting your time practicing at the driving range.

Even hitting thousands of balls at one of these great indoor practice nets would not help your game.

Important:

Pulling from the left or lead side in the golf swing is the most efficient way how to practice golf.

Hit great at the range but terrible on the course

Have you heard this before? “I hit the ball amazing at the range yesterday, but I just can’t get it going today … I don’t understand, I don’t feel like I’m doing anything differently”. The problem with most golfers practice is they don’t address the real problem in their swings and are not working towards fixing them.

This is wasted practice and if this is you you're wasting your time at the range and need to address the problem quickly.

Does this sound like you at the driving range?

You’re hitting balls at the range and for the first half of the bucket you’re hitting them poorly and can’t seem to find the middle of the clubface. Then, like a strike of lightning you start flushing them right off the middle and begin to start feeling really good about yourself. The reason is, if you hit enough golf balls one after another you can eventually start to time a compensation well enough to start hitting it solid.

It’s very misleading!

You go to the course the next day for a round feeling on top of the world.

“I’m going to kill it today, this is going to be my best round ever”.

What happens is your game falls apart and you struggle for consistency and can barely find the middle of the clubface like you were at the range.

Why range form doesn’t translate to the golf course?

Simple, at the range you were just hitting enough balls that you managed to build in enough compensations at some point to start hitting the golf ball solid. You were never improving your golf swing! And because the time between each shot was shorter as compared to a live round, you were able to get into a groove and start flushing shots more often.

If this is how you practice then you’re better off not practicing at all and just heading to the course.

However, if you really want to learn how to practice golf correctly and start making your practice sessions count, this is what you should be doing.

The right way to practice for better results

Right from the beginning, every golfer needs to identify what faults they have before they can start to see any improvement in their game. The best way to do this is to record your golf swing on video so you can clearly see what is happening and why you get the results you’re getting.

The key is finding out what the root cause of your poor shots is so you can develop a plan to fix them and start making progress.

3 ways to identify the root cause of your swing faults

Identifying the root cause of your golf swing faults is vital if your want to see any real improvement in your golf game. By fixing the root cause of your swing faults you're more likely to start hitting the golf ball well again.

Here are 3 great methods that you need to do.

Video your golf swing from down the line:

Get someone to video your golf swing from down the line (behind) and face on when you’re at the driving range. Next, you need to either buy either some software where you can compare your golf swing to a professional and try and identify the key differences on what you might be doing wrong.

Visit your local golf professional for some lessons:

Go and visit a local golf professional for some lessons who should film your golf swing for you. They will identify the real issues in your swing if they’re any good and will give you some practice drills you can take to the range and at home to practice. This will cost anywhere from $50.00 to $150.00 an hour depending on where you go.

Submit your golf swing online to an instructor:

Submit your golf swing videos online to a golf instructor and have them critique your swing. Most will usually upload your video online and compare it to a top professional and give you a voice over of the key areas you’re performing wrong and what you need to fix and provide drills to practice.

Options 2 and 3 are highly recommended as this is where you’ll get the quickest improvement and the best advice from professionals.

With option 3 my recommendation would be to join the guys at Rotary Swing who are arguably the most knowledgeable online when it comes to the golf swing.

They’ll take your golf swing and identify the parts you need to improve and complete fortnightly critiques of your swing.

They also give you recommended videos on their site to watch that have drills you can practice to master the swing issue.

Getting the most out of your practice sessions

As mentioned above, the key to real improvement is understanding what the root cause of your swing faults are. Once you know this you can begin to practice and ingrain a fix to ensure the changes become permanent.

For example:

You might have a weak grip which results in the clubface being open at the top of your backswing and then you cut across the ball at impact resulting in a big slice.

You might pull the club too far to the inside in the takeaway which forces your club across the line at the top of the backswing resulting in an over the top move in the downswing and you pull lots of shots to the left.

Whatever golf swing fault you have it doesn’t matter.

The lesson here is to find out the root cause of your poor shots, practice a good drill at home or at the driving range until it becomes ingrained in your golf swing.

Now it's your turn

This is how to practice golf effectively and efficiently.

Then and only then will your time at the driving range be well spent.

Otherwise you are just forking out $10 a bucket to get some fresh air and to get out the house away from the kids.

Make your practice count!
