Golf Stretches: 3 Simple Ways To Prepare For A Round of Golf

The best golf stretches to warm up

Do you ever feel stiff and sore at the start of your round and can’t seem to get your swing going? Maybe you feel as though you can’t rotate your shoulders fully and get enough power in your golf swing? If this sounds like you then there is a good chance you haven’t warmed up correctly and performed the right golf stretches in time for your round.

Being fully stretched and limber is crucial to performing a good golf swing and getting the best results on the golf course.

If you haven’t performed any golf stretching exercises you are setting yourself up for failure!

The good news is implementing some great golf stretches into your pre-golf routine only takes a few minutes.

Any level of golfer can do these and get a tremendous amount of benefit out of them.

THE CLEAN AND JERK

This is a great golf stretching exercise for the shoulders and back muscles which obviously play a key part in the golf swing.

  1. Grab a golf club and hold both ends with either hand

  2. Hold above your head like you’re trying to do a clean and jerk in weightlifting

  3. Really stretch out your arms and feel the shoulders and back muscles getting worked

  4. Hold for 10 seconds

DO THE REVERSE CLEAN AND JERK

Similar to the above only it’s done with the golf club being held from behind your body.

  1. Grab a golf club and hold both ends with either hand

  2. Hold the club behind your body with your arms straight

  3. Stretch out as far as you can and bend at the hips

  4. Hold for 10 seconds

PRACTICE YOUR SHOULDER TURN

A simple but effective way to warm up your shoulders is to perform shoulder turns almost like a golf swing.

  1. Grab a golf club and place it on the back of your shoulders

  2. Turn 90° degrees to the right and then 90° to the left

  3. Hold each stretch in either direction for 10 seconds

Similar to the above try holding each end of the golf club out in front of you and doing the same type of shoulder movement.

This adds a slightly different bit of stretch to the shoulders that are really effective.

TOUCH YOUR TOES

If the thought of trying to touch your toes seems impossible do not fear.

You don’t have to be able to touch right to the bottom but at least get the feeling of stretching out your upper body.

  1. Grab a golf club and hold it at each end

  2. Hold arms straight out in front of you

  3. Push your arms towards the ground and try and touch your toes

  4. Stretch out and hold for 10 seconds

This is a great exercise for stretching out the shoulders, back, hamstrings, and calf muscles.

THE BEST FOR LAST

This is a relatively new golf stretching exercise I’ve started doing over the past 5 years.

What I like about it best is it stretches every muscle needed that does the work in the golf swing.

  1. Grab a golf club and stand it upright in front of you

  2. Place both hands at the top of the grip

  3. Place opposite foot on the opposite legs thigh

  4. Bend down slightly and stretch the arms out straight

  5. Hold for 10 seconds focusing on your balance with eyes forward

If you are ever short for a time prior to tee off and you don’t know what to stretch, this is the one for you.

It’s one of the best golf stretches I know of. It works everything and will have you ready for action in just a matter of seconds.

Now it’s your turn

Give these golf stretches a try and I’ll guarantee you’ll feel better and more ready than you’ve ever been for a round of golf.

Be sure to give yourself at least 10 minutes time before tee off to do them right. This means slow and deliberate with good form.

A good golf stretching routine will get your body into the right shape before you tee off and the best chance of playing a great round.
