Set up - down the line

Jordan sets up in a typical touring pro athletic position. His knees are slightly flexed and his back forms a nice straight line from his waist to his shoulder.

His arms are hanging naturally from his shoulders and his hands are sitting roughly below his chin line.

All these parts ensure he is able to make a full shoulder turn and access the maximum amount of power his body can generate.

Takeaway - Down the Line

As Jordan commences his takeaway the golf club starts outside the line of the hands. This is a great move that ensures the golf club stays in front of his body throughout the backswing.

A common mistake from recreational golfers is letting the golf club come inside the hands on the takeaway which causes a domino effect of other swing problems.

A takeaway like this keeps Jordan’s golf swing on plane right from the start making it easier to deliver the golf club on the right path on the downswing.

Top of backswing – Down the line

As you can see from the orange line, Jordan has maintained his posture he created at set up with his buttocks. This is crucial in developing a consistent, repeatable golf swing.

You’ll notice he has a very flat left wrist at the top which enables him to shallow the golf club on the downswing and avoid any over the top golf swing issues that many recreational golfers struggle with.

He’s maintained a slight flex in his rear leg which again keeps the golf swing on plane.

Finally, the clubhead is on the same plane (or line) as the left arm which helps to keep his golf swing on plane and not messing up any angles.

Half way downswing - down the line

Jordan’s downswing is initiated by his lower body as he squats into the big muscles of his legs. He lets gravity drop the club beautifully on plane where the club shaft is splitting his right forearm. A key position found in all great players.

If you look at the tush line against his buttock you’ll see that he has maintained his golf posture which keeps the swing on plane.

His chest is still in the closed position meaning he hasn’t spun his upper body open too quickly resulting in big slices like a lot of recreational golfers do.

impact position - down the line

At impact Jordan is a little different than most top players. He’s shifted his weight to the lead leg and rolls on his ankle. Not ideal but it works for him.

He gets into an open position to make room for his arms to swing through.

He’s maintained the tush line he created at address keeping his swing on plane.

You’ll notice how much straighter his legs are indicating he has pushed off the ground for power in the downswing.

Follow through - down the line

To prove he’s shifted his weight correctly, Jordan’s back foot is up on his toes. His chest is pointing to the target showing he’s rotated his upper body correctly through the ball.

I mentioned in the impact analysis about Jordan’s lead ankle and how he rolls on it. It’s not a great position and obviously not affecting his game at present but might be an issue in years to come.

Balanced finish indicating that the golf swing was performed with a nice tempo and not too quick.

Set up - Face on 

Jordan has the classic look in this position with the lead shoulder slightly higher than the rear which is perfect. His head is behind the golf ball at address and in the correct position to make nice full shoulder turn.

His head also has that slight tilt away look similar to how Jack Nicklaus used to look back in his prime.

He has his feet slightly wider than shoulder width apart which gives him stability and balance throughout the swing.

It’s a great golf swing set up that sets the foundation for the rest of the golf swing.

Takeaway - Face on

A great part of Jordan Spieth’s golf swing is how he keeps both arms relatively straight for the first part of the takeaway.

This creates more width resulting in more power that gets generated throughout the golf swing.

He lets the wrist hinge slowly and naturally and doesn’t force their movement.

Jordan keeps his feet planted on the ground remaining balanced and doesn’t rotate his hips too much creating an opportunity for separation between the hips and shoulders which leads to more power.

This is a great looking golf swing takeaway.

Top of backswing - Face on

Jordan keeps his head behind the golf ball and maintains this position right to the top of the backswing. He turns his shoulder 90 degrees getting the most out of his body burn for maximum power.

He’s also maintained the right posture with his upper body tilted slightly away from the target and no chance of any reverse pivot happening.

His legs are stable and he has turned his waste about 45 degrees verses the 90 degrees shoulder turn providing plenty of separation resulting in more power in the downswing.

Like most top players Jordan maintains a good amount of lag in the golf swing as you can see with the angle between his right arm and shaft of the club.

As he’s shifting his weight to the lead side he continues to keep his head behind the golf ball.

He lets his arms drop naturally in the downswing as the legs initiate the movement towards the golf ball.

As mentioned before Jordan performs a unique move of letting his lead ankle roll towards the target. This becomes more prominent in the next image.

It doesn’t have any negative effects on his game at present but might be something to keep an eye on in the future.

Jordan gets plenty of shaft lean which is a good indicator of a great ball striker. He’s maintain a slight axis tilt at impact that he created at his original set up over the golf ball.

The logo of his golf glove is facing towards the target is another great sign his arms and hands have moved the correct way into the golf ball.

Jordan's left arm is slightly bent which is unique in professional golf, but helps to keep the clubface square longer through the ball.

His head is positioned perfectly behind the golf ball ensuring solid contact with maximum power.

follow through - face on

Jordan has a unique position to him where the lead ankle rolls towards the target. It means he’s made a good golf weight shift but could also result in a long term injury.

His rear foot is up on its toes again shows great transfer of weight through the golf ball.

This picture also shows great balance and timing that Jordan has maintained throughout the golf swing.

His right shoulder has moved well past the left indicating a great shoulder turn and finish through the golf ball.
